Castle Restaurant Burg Klöden

Our castle looks back on a long history. On April 12 in the year 965 AD, Emperor Otto I, in Nordhausen, granted the monastery of St. John in Magdeburg the honey tithe from the Slavic province of Nizizi, located in the county of his loyal follower Hodo.

This county included, among other places, the castle ward settlement of Clotna (today Klöden), and thus Burg Klöden is mentioned for the first time in documents in the year 965. Archaeological excavations even prove a fortification that was already mentioned around the year 700 and originated from the Slavs. At Burg Klöden, it can easily happen that you wander from door to door, through rooms and corridors, and claim to have arrived where you first entered—only to find that everything suddenly looks completely different. Finding your way around the old masonry can be quite tricky for visitors unfamiliar with the place. Fortunately, you will repeatedly encounter the good souls of the castle, who guide you safely and share wonderfully eerie, sad, and amusing stories of the castle (museum & guided tours). For example, what is now the restaurant was once part of the courtroom—the scene of the so-called high court. This is where witch trials were held and people were sentenced to death.

Keeping one’s bearings in the old walls can be quite challenging for newcomers. All the better that one repeatedly meets the good souls of the castle, who guide visitors safely and reveal wonderfully eerie, sad, and humorous stories of the castle.
