Just a short detour from the Elbe Cycle Route in Radebeul, an extraordinary cultural experience awaits: the Karl May Museum. While Karl May (1842–1912) might be a household name in Germany as the creator of legendary characters like Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, he is also one of the most translated German authors worldwide. His adventure novels, set in the American Wild West and the Orient, have shaped the imagination of generations.
The museum is housed in two distinct buildings. In "Villa Shatterhand," May’s former residence, visitors can explore his private library and his famous collection of weapons, including the legendary "Silver Gun." This part of the museum offers deep insights into the life and vivid imagination of an author who wrote about distant lands long before he ever visited them. In contrast, the rustic log cabin "Villa Bärenfett" (Bear Fat Villa) houses one of Europe’s most significant ethnological collections on the indigenous peoples of North America, showcasing authentic cultural treasures beyond the literary clichés.
For cyclists, the museum offers a perfect break. Located only about 800 meters from the cycle path, the park-like grounds provide a peaceful atmosphere to rest. Lockers are available for helmets and small bags, allowing for a relaxed tour of the exhibits. The museum is generally open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. It is a unique stop that combines German literary history with the spirit of international adventure.
