Dommitzsch - between geese, history and nature on the Elbe Cycle Route
Dommitzsch is the northernmost town in Saxony. It is located directly on the Elbe Cycle Route and offers cyclists a special stopover. The town combines tradition, history and nature in a unique way.
The geese - a living landmark
Almost every household in Dommitzsch used to keep geese. Every morning, a goose maid drove the animals out into the meadows. In the evening, the geese found their way back to their yards on their own. This daily spectacle characterised life in the village. Many people still remember this special time today.
That is why the goose is the town's landmark. The goose fountain stands on the market square. It was designed by the artist Bruno Kubas. The goose maid made of clay and the geese in the fountain tell of the close connection between humans and animals. Every year in June, Dommitzsch celebrates the Goose Fountain Festival. There is a parade, a nature market and lots of regional specialities. The festival attracts visitors from all over the region.
The town hall - Art Nouveau in the heart of the town
The town hall is located on the market square. It was built in 1911 in the Art Nouveau style. The old town hall from 1560 had previously burnt down. Today, the new town hall forms the centre of the town together with St Mary's Church. The city centre is small but charming. You can easily reach all the sights on foot.
The Düben Heath - experience pure nature
Dommitzsch is not only located on the Elbe, but also on the edge of the Düben Heath. This vast forest landscape is a paradise for nature lovers. The nature park offers many hiking and cycling trails. Wild animals such as beavers, cranes and geese can be observed here. The landscape is varied: there are forests, streams, ponds and meadows. If you are looking for peace and quiet, you will find it here.
Leisure and recreation
After a cycle tour, the Dommitzsch forest and natural swimming pool invites you to refresh yourself. If you want to find out more about the history of the town, visit the local history museum in the old pharmacy. There you can gain exciting insights into life in earlier times.
