Wörlitz, a charming little town in Saxony-Anhalt, achieved great fame in the second half of the 18th century: this is where the earliest, largest and probably most beautiful English landscape park in continental Europe was created. Along winding paths and canals, it features a neoclassical castle, ancient temples, neo-Gothic buildings, dark grottos and a labyrinth of rough ‘rock stone’, a volcanic island as well as chain, floating, iron and wooden bridges of all kinds. Unexpected glimpses of previously hidden garden pictures delight at every turn and make the walk unforgettable. Completely new views open up again when you take a leisurely ride through the park in a gondola.
Wörlitz Park is part of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Friedrich Franz, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau, created a garden south of the Elbe in the 18th century that extended beyond the Wörlitz Park: his entire country was to become a garden. This is why several landscape parks were created and elegantly interwoven with older Baroque and Rococo palace complexes - kilometres of visual axes and pathways have characterised the unique landscape ever since.
Together with the Mosigkau and Oranienbaum palace parks, the Luisium, the Dessau Georgium and Kühnau Park as well as the forest park on Sieglitzer Berg, the Wörlitz Park still forms a unique overall experience of nature, art and culture on 142 km². Beauty, inspiration and relaxation are the special charm of a visit to the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz.
