The source of the Elbe (Pramen Labe) is located at an altitude of 1,386 meters near Špindlerův Mlýn in the Giant Mountains. It is a highlight for any tour along the Elbe Cycle Route. There are several ways to reach it: a sporting ride entirely by bike, with support from the cable car, or on foot for those with more time. Generally, you should plan at least a half to full day for your visit to the source.

In the Czech Republic, the Elbe Cycle Route follows the signage for Cycle Route No. 2. Currently, this signage begins or ends in Vrchlabí, about 24 km from the source of the Elbe. Our recommended Komoot tours start here at the railway station closest to the source. Alternatively, the station in Kunčice nad Labem (an additional 5 km) is a good option due to better train connections. From June to September, you can also take advantage of the Giant Mountains cycle buses running between Hradec Králové, Vrchlabí, and Špindlerův Mlýn. These run on weekends in June and September, and daily throughout July and August.

Cycle Route No. 2 offers two alternatives from Vrchlabí toward the Elbe source. The sporting option covers around 27 km with over 1,000 meters of elevation gain via Benecko, Třídomí, and Horní Mísečky. We recommend riding this section without luggage and leaving it at your accommodation.

If you want to save your energy, take the flatter route along Road 295 to Špindlerův Mlýn and take the Medvědín chairlift. Bikes are carried free of charge. Once at the top, follow cycle routes K13A (3138) and K13 (3140) to the Elbe Shack (Labská bouda). Bikes must be parked there, as the final kilometer to the source is strictly restricted to foot traffic.

For the return cycle trip to Vrchlabí, you can take Route No. 3140 via Horní Mísečky to Benecko, and then continue on Route No. 3137 via Křížovky.

Alternatively, an extensive hike to the Elbe source is a great choice. The starting point is also the Medvědín chairlift in Špindlerův Mlýn. Once you arrive, follow the course of the young Elbe River, including a detour to the Elbe Waterfall (Labský vodopád) near the Elbe Shack for fantastic panoramic views over the Giant Mountains.
