Ferry connections along the Elbe

More than 30 ferries invite you to cross from one riverbank to the other.

At the Elbe’s wide mouth, the opposite shore is sometimes barely visible. One of the great charms of the Elbe Cycle Route is the freedom to hop on a ferry spontaneously, switch sides, and explore the path on the other bank.
Just remember to check the ferry timetables and water levels – during high or low water, some services may be suspended.

Most ferries are privately operated and need to cover their costs, so the ferryman will collect a small fare.

Along the Elbe Cycle Route, you’ll encounter a wide variety of ferries – particularly fascinating are the traditional reaction ferries (Gierseilfähren) on the Middle Elbe.
